Press the strip around each curve and pin it before you sew it.

A little steam will iron out a little waviness but keeping it really flat while sewing is the trick.
My thought is that steaming and pressing after each round you are stretching your fabrics along the straight sides.
It also helps if you pull it off the machine every few rows and press then let lay flat to cool before moving on.
It is just the curved edges where you are coercing the fabric around the curves that you have to remember to relax and just let the fabric guide itself around the previous row.
